How to Make Firework time a less scary time for Pets

How to Make Firework time a less scary time for Pets

t is reaching that time of year when pet owners start worrying about the effects of Fireworks on their pets, and you would be right to worry- the flashing and banging created by Fireworks can be terrifying for some pets.If your pet is scared, there are some things you can start doing now to help desensitise them for this year, but it also best to think about a longterm solution, as it comes round suddenly every year!!

Thanks to ‘Smart Speakers’, we have access to Fireworks sounds on request. Start by asking your smart speaker to play Fireworks sounds at a volume that is barely detectable to you. Pets have much better hearing than humans, so they will be able to hear the gentle ‘pops’ and ‘bangs’ but it should not be alarming to them. While these sounds are playing for as long as possible every day, your pet will start to get used to them, especially if you are carrying on about the house as normal, and not reacting to yours pets reactions. You might feed them or play with them while these gentle noises are going on in the background. Leading up to Bonfire night, you can do this daily, while gradually over the next 4 weeks increasing the volume, just one grade every few days.

Monitor your pet – if the volume gets to a stage where they seem more aware, don’t increase the volume for a while until they become used to it. Eventually your pet will be so used to the sounds, that it will not cause them as much alarm. It is important to know that you should continue the fireworks noise therapy throughout the year for it to be most effective. Just once a week should do it!

On Firework display nights, allow you pet to have a place to hide. Some like to be left alone, while others will seek comfort from cuddles. Try to make soothing noises but don’t fuss them too much as this may make them feel they have cause for concern. Close all curtains and have the T.V on with a reasonable volume. The TV sounds can mask the fireworks sounds, and the flashing screen can disguise the flashing of the fireworks outside. Before the Fireworks start, give them some 4PAWSRAW Calming Tincture straight into their mouth. This is a solution that helps reduce anxiety and has a natural calming effect without sedation. Remember that sedating them makes YOU feel better, but your pets may still be fearful but unable to react or hide.
