Stand C46 will include the brand new StrongBack self-propel wheelchair alongside the original attendant-controlled StrongBack, cutting-edge WHILL and the TGA range of four powerpacks. New to the market the StrongBack self-propel wheelchair is an award-winning, Swiss-designed product that incorporates a contoured backrest for effective lumbar support. Its sculpted backrest moulds around the natural curvature of the spine so that better postural positioning can be achieved with reduced slumping or slouching. Building on the popularity of the attendant-controlled version, the new StrongBack provides greater postural support and a healthier seated position for many wheelchair users without the need for complex adjustments. Its 7.9kg lightweight frame ensures lifting and carrying is strain-free and the 24'' wheels are quick release. When folded the StrongBack is compact for straightforward storage enhanced by reversable leg rests. This innovative wheelchair has a remarkably high user weight of 135kg and is available in 40cm and 45cm seat widths. The inclusion of attendant handles and brakes provides optional attendant propulsion by carers and both StrongBacks are compatible with all TGA wheelchair powerpacks.
The four TGA powerpacks provide powered propulsion so pushing a wheelchair is strain-free. With a vast range of fittings available each powerpack is compatible with the majority of wheelchair designs including specialist tilt-in-space models. The Solo, Duo, Heavy-duty and PLUS models provide a choice in terms of power and traction – all with utmost performance and reliability. The PLUS version provides a bariatric solution that propels occupants weighing up to 32 stone. TGA Powerpacks are renowned for fitting further under a wheelchair so unhindered walking is possible for the carer and the controls are simple and responsive. The risk of back and muscle injury is minimised by use of a powerpack especially when negotiating uneven surfaces, slopes and kerbs. Hence carer sickness can be reduced and overall the outdoor experience is more positive for both wheelchair occupant and attendant.
Alongside demonstrations of the ergonomic wheelchairs and powerpacks from TGA, stand C46 will also showcase the pioneering new WHILL powerchair. Launched this year, WHILL is the first 'personal electric vehicle' of its kind that provides stylish aesthetics and advanced manoeuvrability. Following success in its inherent Japan and subsequently in the US, TGA have introduced WHILL to the UK so powerchair users can now chose a truly cutting-edge solution.
Its unique 'omni' front wheels can rotate forwards and laterally so the smallest turning circle can be achieved for maximum driveability in confined spaces. Through powerful four-wheel-drive WHILL is able to tackle challenging terrain such as sand and gravel with ease – traditionally difficult for the majority of powerchairs. The control joystick is instead an ergonomic 'computer mouse' style device that is highly responsive and requires minimal effort to move. Powered seat slide provides appropriate positioning at a table or desk and the swing-away armrests require minimal strength to move so side transfers are seamless.
