5 Stunning Accessible Beaches with Disabled Parking In Cornwall

5 Stunning Accessible Beaches with Disabled Parking In Cornwall

Cornwall is a truly stunning place with so many award winning beaches and tourist attractions that have all the accessible facilities you would expect for those with mobility issues.

Cornwall is one of our top places to visit and listed below are just 5 of our favourite beaches with disabled access and parking.

* If you are planning on taking dogs to any of these beaches, be sure to check with the local tourist office that the particular beach allows dogs. Some beaches in Cornwall have a 'seasonal dog ban' which tends to run between Easter Sunday and September 30th.

Portreath Beach - West Cornwall

The large beach has soft fine sand, with shingle below the shore line, that is popular with families. The harbour wall and “rocky” is popular with surfers for its “vortex” surf break. Refreshments may be obtained from the Beach Café or The Retreat Restaurant & Take-Away which has a relaxed atmosphere with comfy sofas.

There are two surf/beach shops and an amusement arcade for families located on the seafront. Public toilets are also available close by. The village has a local supermarket, Post Office, Bakery and a tearoom located within The Square. The village also has three pubs – one of which overlooks the harbour and a smaller, sandy beach.

Praa Sands Beach - West Cornwall > Helston > Penzance

When you take the short walk from the car park to Praa Sands you’ll be struck by how white the sand is, blinding so in the sunshine. Apparently, and here’s the science, the light sand is made from seashells that have been pulverised by wave action over millions of years. Located in the south west-facing bend between the Lizard and west Penwith, the mile-long sandy beach is backed with sheltering sand dunes and its easily accessible position is enjoyed by families having fun in the shallows while further out the surf brigade take on some surprisingly big waves.

A wonderful destination if you have hoards of kids to entertain, they’ll love the beach which is great for sand castles, the shoreline is great for splashing about in and you won’t have to drag miles from the car park. Also it’s a pretty good stop off point just for a coffee where you can sit back and soak up the fun seaside vibe.

The Beachcomber beach cafe offers a range of drinks and snacks throughout the main holiday seasons.

Please note: Dogs are welcome on this beach except between Easter Sunday and 30 September (07:00am - 07:00pm) when a seasonal dog ban is in place.

East Looe Beach - South Coast

A lovely bucket and spade style beach located on south east Cornwall’s tranquil coast. A long-time favourite with holidaymakers, East Looe beach is a perfect location for swimming as the beach gently shelves providing easy access especially for the little ones. The sand is great for castle building and you can promenade along the sea front enjoying an ice cream. Backed by substantial sea defences where you can sit and watch the world go by, behind the beach is the vibrant main town home to cafes, restaurants and shops.

From the unusually shaped Banjo Pier next to the beach you can watch the many fishing boats come and go while crabbing is the favoured pastime for kids along the nearby harbour walls. Many boat trips leave from the town to explore the beautiful coastline and Looe Island, a wildlife sanctuary just off Hannafore Point and there’s even a glass bottom boat from where you can observe the marvels of local marine life.

Sand chairs for the disabled available for hire, please contact Looe Town Trust Seafront Workshops on 01503 263709

Porthminster Beach - St Ives - West Cornwall

This crescent of golden sand, framed by a glittering bay, has glorious views across to Godrevy Lighthouse, inspiration for Virginia Woolf’s famous novel ‘To the Lighthouse’. With the benefit of the mildest climate in the UK along with waving palm trees and translucent waters, there is a definite tropical feel to the place.

Located just a short walk from the centre of St Ives, the award-winning Blue Flag beach at Porthminster is a family favourite for safe swimming while onshore you can simply relax in a deck chair or try your skill at the mini 18 hole golf course where you can also order up freshly made juices and smoothies. If you’re feeling peckish the beach is also home to the Porthminster Beach café.  Serving up great local food, some of which is grown in their adjoining vegetable garden, the café has won many prestigious awards such as Coast magazine’s Best Coastal Café and The Times’ Best Coastal Restaurant.
